Crock Pot Sweet Garlic Chicken

Ingredients

  • 4-6 chicken breasts
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2/3 cup vinegar (I used apple cider vinegar)
  • 1/4 cup lemon-lime soda (diet or regular)
  • 2-3 Tablespoons minced garlic
  • 2 Tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ground pepper
  • 2 Tablespoons corn starch
  • 2 Tablespoons water
  • Red pepper flakes (optional)

Directions

Spray slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray. Place chicken (frozen, thawed or fresh) inside slow cooker. Mix together brown sugar, vinegar, soda, garlic, soy sauce, and pepper together. Pour over chicken. Cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 4 hours.

Take chicken pieces out of slow cooker (mine basically fell apart) and pour remaining sauce into saucepan. Place saucepan over high heat. Mix together corn starch and water, pour into saucepan, and mix well. Let sauce come to a boil and boil for 2-3 minutes, or until it starts to thicken and turns into a glaze. Remove from heat and let sit for a minute or two (it will continue to thicken as it cools down).

Sprinkle red pepper flakes on top if desired. This can be served over rice or noodles

This sounds delicious. Is the soda necessary or could I replace it with something else? I don’t buy soda and would prefer not to buy it just for this recipe.

I used lemonade for same taste 🙂

  2. Could I cook this in my dutch oven? what temp and for how long?

    1. ekuhns says:

I’m sure you could but I have never tried, so I couldnt tell you temp or time

  3. Did you do boneless chicken breasts or with the bone?

    1. ekuhns says:

      Boneless breasts

I just made this the other night and it was a HUGE hit. I used boneless chicken breast just because I don’t like to deal with bones. I had three packs of Foster Farms chicken from Costco which had two breasts each, so used six. the glaze/sauce was delish and I served with rice, plus I made a small side of mashed potatoes for someone who requested it. But I think rice works best especially with the sauce. 🙂 Thank you for sharing! It is so rare for me to come across a recipe that has all basic ingredients I have at home.

Glad you all liked it. I always get good reviews when I make this and it is so easy and basic!

  5. Is there any substitute I can use instead of the brown sugar?

    1. ekuhns says:

You could use brown sugar substitute.

This tastes delicious! I used regular vinegar, orange juice and garlic powder because it is what I had on hand. I mixed in red bell pepper, onions and broccoli and served it over rice. Fingers crossed my kids like it as much as I do =)

  7. What can I substitute for soda?

    1. ekuhns says:

      Apple juice

  8. Made it tonight and used apple juice for the soda and seasoned rice vinegar. Was delicious thanks.

  9. Made this tonight and fixed spaghetti noodles. Once I had the sauce thickened I dropped the spaghetti in the sauce along with the chicken…it was wonderful. Definitely a keeper recipe!

I made it for lunch today for an alternative to BBQ pulled-pork sandwiches. Great sauce. I’ll use it for a pork roast next time! Thanks for the recipe.

i had to use orange juice instead of soda and fig-infused vinegar…fingers crossed:)

Great recipe! Excellent taste and quick to make. I have made it several times and my family really likes it. The first time I made it we thought it was a little too sweet so now I double the sauce except for the brown sugar and use water with lemon juice (no sweetener) in place of the soda.

Can I add skinned thighs with the breasts?

    1. ekuhns says:

      I am sure you could

  14. Kala Allen says:

sorry if this is a dumb question, but is the chicken cooked before putting in the crock pot?

    1. Kala Allen says:

another maybe dumb question 🙂 do i put the chicken in the saucepan after cooking with the sauce? or is that sauce a glaze that goes over the chicken when done. thanks!

      1. ekuhns says:

        Cook with the chicken.

    2. ekuhns says:

No I put it in frozen actually

Absolutely delicious! Had to double sauce ingredients, although brown sugar total was only 1 cup and 2/3 cup apple cider vinegar (as I reduced these due to other reviewer’s comments). Cooked for 3-4 hours on high; meat just fell apart. Added chilli flakes to sauce ingredients. Used 3 large chicken breasts and lemon-lime mineral water (as couldn’t find lemon-lime soft drink). Would definitely have again. All gave this 10!

Lemon lime soft drink is just Sprite or 7 UP 🙂
